selloutsamizdat asked: Perhaps you should also inform youngsters who are interested in journalism that they should prepare to work long hours for little pay, paltry personal lives and no respect. I have spoken to college and high school students many times, and most of them had grandiose expectations about what a journalism career entails. I would always tell them these truths about journalism and advise them that they should go for it only if they truly love it.
Good point. (By the way, I like your site design. I studied Russian when I was 18). And the stress, enhanced by the poor pay, lack of personal life, etc. I remember having night terrors on the eve of certain stories running, fearing I screwed something up.
No doubt journalism remains a calling, maybe now more than ever. Thing is, I have taught and gotten to know young wannabe journalists who have WAY more on the ball than I did, and I had a terrific career. I have high hopes for the future of journalism.
